Perhaps you've seen theater critics furiously scribbling in their little notebooks in the dark, and you've wondered what incisive commentary they're setting down to use later in some review you're never going to read.
I wish I could tell you. I scribble my own notes, of course, but when I look at them later, I find incisive commentary difficult to come by (if I can read my scratchings at all). In fact, I'd say about 97% of the notes I take are useless. A sampling from the notebook I currently carry around:
