A look at how I've been diverting myself lately.
READ: Finishing the Hat by Stephen Sondheim [the lyrics are primo, of course, but Sondheim's commentaries? Niggling, pedantic, joyless].
SAW: The King's Speech [I mean, I was glad he got through his radio address and all, but it sort of irritated me how everybody in the movie acted like this guy's stammer was the most difficult problem anyone in Europe was facing in 1939], Psycho [have you ever noticed that the dude who plays Janet Leigh's boyfriend is really hot? Somehow it had escaped my notice in previous viewings].
LAST WEEK'S MOVIE NIGHT PICKS:
THEME: French history.
KITO'S SELECTION: Quills (dir. Kaufman, 2000).
MINE: The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer, 1928).
PURCHASED: Finian's Rainbow: Original Broadway Cast Recording [at the closing sale at the Uptown Borders].
SAW: William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg (ThinkArt) [splattered paint on boards from the former, photographs of Beats from the latter--and speaking of hot, how about that Jack Kerouac?].
ATE: Coctel de camarones, ropa vieja, and pineapple sorbet @ Habana Libre [turns out I ADORE Cuban cuisine].
Patti LuPone, my appearance, travel, my dog Lucy, movies, Kito, the Reader, Liza Minnelli, copy editing, my day job, Chicago history, Glee, my adolescence, food, comedy.
FOUR ITEMS I PURCHASED IN UPTOWN BORDERS' GOING-OUT-OF-BUSINESS SALE:
1. Finian's Rainbow: Original Broadway Cast Recording.
2. How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying: Original Broadway Cast Recording.
3. The Pajama Game: Original Broadway Cast Recording.
4. Merriam-Webster's Rhyming Dictionary [second edition].
ONE YEAR AGO: "'Are you actors?' I asked. 'No,' his wife replied, 'just Russian.'"
FOUR YEARS AGO: "Haven't you heard that a scrotum lift is all the rage with older Hollywood now? Robert Redford just had his done a year ago."
FIVE YEARS AGO: "It is to my mind a display of monstrous ignorance not to know your Isabel Sanford from your Esther Rolle.
