Ever since Kito and I moved into our new apartment, my mom has been saying she wants to buy us a plant as a housewarming gift. She was in town this weekend for a visit, so on Saturday the three of us went to Gethsemane Garden Center to pick something out. After we had decided on a dracaena standing about three-and-a-half feet tall, a Gethsemane employee came over and talked for a very long time about soil and sunlight and water and draining trays and the diameter of pots and the dracaena's merits in comparison to the ficus and the direction our windows should face. I hope Kito was listening, because I was too busy thinking up a name for this new addition to our family.
I went with Stephanie. Here's a photo.
She joins our jade plant, Blanche, who made a miraculous recovery following a prolonged sickly phase but has lately shown an alarming tendency to droop and shed parts of herself. I fear that she has become faded, fragile, and doomed, just like her namesake, Blanche DuBois.
